The “Estonian State Fleet” has signed a contract with Poland’s CRIST Shipyard for the design and construction of Estonia’s first fully electric passenger ferry.

The new vessel will primarily operate on shore-charged green electricity and is designed for operation in the challenging conditions of the Baltic Sea, including icy winter environments.

Measuring approximately 100 meters in length, the ferry will be capable of carrying either 110 passenger cars or 8 trucks, as well as up to 380 passengers. It is reported to be up to 64% more energy-efficient compared to existing diesel-powered vessels.

The vessel’s main energy system will be based on a 3 MWh battery pack. For extended operations, additional biodiesel generators will be installed, enabling voyages of up to 1,000 nautical miles.

The ferry is being built to Ice Class 1B standards, allowing it to operate in ice conditions up to 60 cm thick. The total project cost is estimated at around €49.93 million, with partial funding provided by the European Union’s Modernisation Fund.

Delivery is expected within 30 months, with entry into service planned for 2028.
