A new technological phase in maritime decarbonization is emerging in liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport. Cryosafe Services and bound4blue have signed a strategic partnership to expand the use of wind-assisted propulsion in LNG carriers.

The collaboration focuses on deploying the eSAIL technology, designed to meet the structural requirements of LNG vessels as well as terminal safety standards.

The system is based on modern automated suction sail units that generate aerodynamic lift. According to reports, the technology produces around seven times more lift compared to conventional sails, enabling more efficient use of vessel speed and deck configurations.

The main goal of the solution is to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, strengthening the environmental sustainability of maritime transport. The system has already been certified by the international classification society DNV.

Companies involved state that the technology not only improves environmental performance but also offers commercial benefits by lowering operational costs for shipowners.

The eSAIL system is currently being tested by leading global shipping companies, with wider adoption in the LNG sector expected in the coming years.
