NYK has taken another significant step in the shipping industry by conducting an autonomous navigation trial on the car carrier “Elder Leader” at the Port of Singapore.
The main objective of the trial was to test real-world digital integration between the vessel and port infrastructure at one of the world’s busiest ports, marking a practical shift toward the “smart port” concept.
During the test, the ship’s voyage plan was directly transmitted to the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority’s (MPA) next-generation traffic management system, while real-time video and operational data were exchanged between shore-based systems and the vessel.
For the first time, “remote pilotage” within a port environment and the “Just-In-Time” (JIT) platform—aimed at reducing waiting times for vessels—were integrated with autonomous systems.
The LNG-powered vessel demonstrated technologies that highlight the parallel advancement of both decarbonization and full digitalization in maritime transport.
The successful trial is seen as a potential milestone toward a future where ships may enter ports with minimal human intervention and operate at significantly higher levels of automation.
