The international classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the company Marlink have launched a new research partnership focused on managing increasingly complex digital systems on ships.
The main goal of the collaboration is to move away from fragmented digital approaches and address issues such as communications, cybersecurity, and system integration within a unified framework.
As part of the research program, the future model for responsibility sharing among shipowners, system integrators, and classification societies will also be examined.
To ensure practical application, a real shipowner involved in new vessel construction has been included in the project. This approach will allow tracking how digital requirements are managed from the design and construction phase through to operation and recycling.
The objective is to reduce the gap between shipping companies’ digital ambitions and real-world implementation, while making the transition toward software-based vessel management systems safer.
