German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd and logistics company Kuehne+Nagel have launched a joint sustainable transport project aimed at reducing emissions through the use of waste-based marine biofuels.
Under the agreement, which covers the period from April to December 2026, approximately 3,300 TEU of cargo will be transported along the East Asia–Northern Europe route.
The pilot project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 2,979 tonnes based on “well-to-wake” calculations.
Within the program, 1,000 tonnes of sustainable marine fuel (SMF) produced from waste and residue feedstocks in compliance with RED III standards will be used.
The initiative is being implemented under Hapag-Lloyd’s “Ship Green” program and applies a “book-and-claim” model. This approach allows customers to account for emission reductions in their own records, regardless of whether the sustainable fuel is physically used on the vessel carrying their cargo.
