First digital map introduced for seafarers

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) has unveiled the industry’s first digital map that consolidates data related to seafarers’ welfare, health, and safety into a unified platform.

The study, funded by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, revealed that information concerning seafarers is currently fragmented across different organizations and lacks unified standards. One of the key findings showed that fatigue is frequently misclassified as “human error” in incident reports, preventing accurate assessment of the real risks involved.

SSI CEO Elli Bessley-Gould stated that although sufficient information exists to manage human-related risks, this data is often not integrated into critical decision-making processes. According to the research, only a small number of insurers and shipowners include seafarer-related risks in their operational decisions, contributing to a rise in accidents and losses.

The next phase of the project aims to bring together all industry stakeholders to establish common indicators and a shared language for managing human risks at sea.
