Canadian ferry giant BC Ferries is launching a one-of-a-kind project in the maritime industry. The company’s four new hybrid-electric vessels will be equipped with a next-generation integrated bridge system developed by Furuno, designed to fully digitalize ship navigation and control.
In one of the world’s rarest maritime applications, the vessels will feature two fully independent captain’s bridges located at both the bow and stern, each capable of completely replacing the other. This ensures uninterrupted navigation in the event of technical failures or emergencies.
More than 20 multifunctional workstations onboard will integrate radar, ECDIS, and all alarm systems into a single network. This will allow the crew to access navigation data from virtually anywhere on the vessel.
Unlike conventional ships, the ferries will be fitted with two simultaneously operating S-Band radars and four X-Band radars, enabling safe navigation even in extremely dense fog and severe storm conditions.
In addition, the ferries will incorporate dedicated cyber-defense systems for the first time, protecting navigation data from external interference. The technology will also make it possible to monitor the vessel’s technical condition in real time from shore-based offices.
Scheduled to enter service in 2029, the vessels are also designed to support a future transition to fully electric operation in line with zero-emission targets.
