The German Parliament (Bundestag) has approved the extension of the German Navy’s participation in the European Union’s “EUNAVFOR Aspides” maritime security operation in the Red Sea.

Sea-news.az reports that the mandate has been extended until October 31, 2027, with the deployment ceiling remaining capped at 350 military personnel.

The primary objective of the mission is to safeguard international merchant shipping and protect commercial vessels against attacks by Houthi forces in Yemen. Germany’s contribution encompasses staff personnel at the operational headquarters in Larissa, Greece, deployment on command vessels, and regular maritime surveillance flights. Security risks in the Red Sea have forced numerous shipping lines to bypass the Suez Canal in favor of the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope, resulting in multi-week cargo delays.
