Major dredging operations aimed at boosting the efficiency of transportation along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) have commenced at the Port of Aktau. The execution of these works became necessary against the backdrop of a continuous decline in the water level of the Caspian Sea, which affects navigation conditions and the operational performance of the port basin.
Citing the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan, sea-news.az reports that the project entails the removal of approximately 1.3 million cubic meters of soil. As a result, the depth of the port’s harbor area is planned to reach 6–7 meters.
The Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan stated that the dredging operations will enhance the port’s throughput capacity and increase cargo transportation volumes along the TITR by up to 30%. Conditions will also be created to reduce maritime freight costs by approximately 10–15%.
According to the ministry, the implementation of the project will also contribute to attracting investments into port infrastructure development and enhancing maritime safety.
The contractor firm has already prepared the execution schedule for the works. Working meetings are regularly conducted to promptly resolve operational issues and coordinate activities among project participants.
The dredging operations are scheduled for completion by the end of the current year.
