On the first Monday of October each year, International Doctor’s Day is observed worldwide as a symbol of solidarity and active cooperation among physicians.
Sea-news.az reports that the establishment of this observance is linked to a joint initiative by the World Health Organization and the international humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières).
Every year, thousands of personnel from Doctors Without Borders provide medical assistance without discrimination to individuals facing emergencies across various countries, including hot spots and conflict zones. Volunteers of the organization also conduct preventive and educational outreach aimed at combating AIDS and drug addiction.
Medicine is one of the most ancient, responsible, and noble professions. At all stages of human development, physicians have been held in high regard, passing their knowledge and expertise down through generations. Over time, advances in medical science have enabled the prevention of numerous severe and fatal diseases, extending life expectancy and enhancing quality of life.
The number of physicians across all specialties in Azerbaijan stood at 34.8 thousand at the beginning of 2026, while mid-level medical staff totaled 55.3 thousand.
Azerbaijani healthcare workers fulfilled their professional duties with immense dedication and high professionalism during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 44-day Patriotic War. They provided crucial services both in combating the pandemic and in treating military personnel wounded during combat operations.
During the Patriotic War, 159 military medical personnel sustained injuries of varying severity. A total of 44 medical workers were martyred, including 11 doctors, 7 paramedics, and 26 medical instructors.
On this significant day, we congratulate all doctors and healthcare workers, expressing our deepest gratitude for their selfless dedication to preserving human health. We wish them robust health and continued success in their challenging and noble profession!
