On the occasion of the International Day of Sign Languages, observed on 23 September, ASCO’s “Surakhani” Ship Museum organised a free special tour for people with hearing and speech impairments.

Sea-news.az reports citing ASCO held under the slogan “Let Us Be the Voice of Silence,” the event was supported by the Public Union for Social Assistance to People with Hearing and Speech Impairments. The tour was led by the museum’s sign language interpreter, Nargiz Abdulova. As the visitors explored the exhibition halls, she provided them with detailed information in sign language about the exhibits on display, the history of the vessel and Azerbaijan’s maritime heritage.

The guests also used the museum’s interactive simulators to perform various simulated ship operations and gain an insight into maritime navigation.

In line with its Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, ASCO consistently prioritises not only the preservation and promotion of maritime heritage but also the creation of equal and accessible opportunities for different groups within society. Initiatives of this kind at the “Surakhani” Ship Museum form an integral part of ongoing efforts to make the museum environment more inclusive and accessible.

It should be noted that, for several years, the museum’s video materials have been presented with sign language interpretation, enabling visitors with hearing and speech impairments to easily access information about the exhibition. Special guided tours in sign language are also regularly organised.
