The Turkish side has applied to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the attack on the Turkish-owned vessel “Reyhan Sari” in the Black Sea, which resulted in the death of a crew member.
Sea-news.az reports citing the specialized maritime news portal HaberDenizde, Nuri Koray Kurun, the founding partner of the “Memishoglu Kurun” law firm, stated that evidence regarding the attack by Ukraine has been submitted to the ICC Prosecutor’s Office.
According to the lawyer, the preliminary stage of the process may take approximately six months, while the entire proceedings could last up to two years.
Along with the shipowner, 12 sailors who were on board the “Reyhan Sari” during the attack and the family of the deceased crew member, Savaş Çakar, also acted as plaintiffs.
Kurun noted that there is not yet a direct precedent-setting decision in the ICC regarding such attacks on commercial vessels.
The lawyer also claimed that during the investigation conducted by the plaintiffs, evidence indicating the use of cluster munitions was discovered in the damage sustained by the vessel.
It should be noted that the “Reyhan Sari” vessel, which was carrying coal from Russia’s Port of Taman to Trabzon, came under attack on July 22 near Novorossiysk.
