World Patient Safety Day

September 16 is celebrated globally as International Invasive Cardiology Day to draw attention to modern medical achievements that enable the saving of millions of lives.

Sea-news.az reports that invasive cardiology encompasses various modern treatment methods, ranging from angioplasty and stenting to transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).

These methods are considered a major breakthrough in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In a number of cases, they allow for a reduction in the need for complex open surgical interventions and enable patients to recover in a shorter period of time.

The celebration of International Invasive Cardiology Day on September 16 is also no coincidence. On September 16, 1977, German physician Andreas Gruentzig performed the world’s first successful coronary angioplasty procedure. This intervention is regarded as the beginning of a new phase in the treatment of ischemic heart disease.

On September 2, 2022, this date was formalized as an international day highlighting the importance of the development of minimally invasive medical technologies by UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/76/302.

According to data from the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases rank among the leading causes of death worldwide. The development of invasive cardiology has created new opportunities in the treatment of heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems. The less traumatic nature of the interventions can enable patients to return to their daily lives more quickly.

Nevertheless, access to modern invasive cardiological treatment options remains limited in many countries. Purchasing high-tech medical equipment and training qualified specialists require significant financial resources. Especially in cardiovascular diseases, timely medical intervention can be of vital importance.

International Invasive Cardiology Day serves to increase attention to the development of this field, the training of specialists, the exchange of experience among medical institutions, and the expansion of access to modern treatment methods.

This date is also an opportunity to raise public awareness about the risk factors, prevention of cardiovascular diseases, and the importance of seeking timely medical assistance.
