“Korean Register”, “HD Hyundai Heavy Industries”, “BAR Technologies” and “Liberian Registry” to explore the use of large wing-sails on new-generation LNG carriers

Sea-news.az reports citing Seanews.az, that the parties signed a memorandum of understanding regarding this on September 15 at the “Gastech 2026” exhibition held in Bangkok.

The project envisages the preparation of a 174,000-cubic-meter capacity LNG carrier and the installation of “BAR Technologies”‘ wind-assisted propulsion “WindWings” system on the vessel.

During the study, the technical feasibility of the technology, safety and regulatory requirements, as well as the potential for fuel consumption and emission reductions will be evaluated.

“WindWings” is a system consisting of large rigid sails, allowing the reduction of the main engine’s load by utilizing wind energy. The goal of the project is to determine the safe and commercially viable application possibilities of the technology on LNG carriers.
