A merchant vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz has sustained a severe onboard fire after being struck by an unidentified projectile.
Sea-news.az reports citing the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center, that initial alerts regarding the incident were received at 23:00 GMT on September 12, though exact timing and tactical details of the attack remain under review.
While initial advisories noted that crew conditions and structural damage assessments were unavailable, updated reports confirmed on September 13 that a major fire broke out across the vessel’s deck following the impact. Local emergency authorities responded to the scene to assist with crew evacuation procedures.
UKMTO has urged all commercial vessels operating in the area to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any suspicious activity or security anomalies. The incident unfolds amid heightened geopolitical friction in the region, following a series of security events targeting commercial shipping across the northern Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Iraqi coastal waters.
Official disclosures regarding the vessel’s name, flag registry, crew nationalities, and the perpetrator behind the attack have not yet been released.
