Large-scale dredging operations in the Caspian Sea, carried out in collaboration with international partners, are scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.
Sea-news.az reports that Eldar Salahov, Director General of Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC (operating under Azerbaijan Railways), made this announcement during a media briefing.
Salahov noted that fluctuations in the level of the Caspian Sea represent a global ecological challenge affecting all littoral states. While emphasizing that receding water levels have not yet created any technical or vessel-handling restrictions at Baku Port, he stressed that proactive countermeasures are underway to mitigate potential future risks.
According to the Director General, an international tender for the dredging project was launched during the summer months, and tender submissions are currently being evaluated.
“We expect to finalize contract terms in the coming days. I believe that by the end of 2026, we will physically begin dredging activities in the Caspian Sea together with our international partners,” Salahov stated.
The dredging initiative is projected to last approximately one and a half years. Technical preparations, comprehensive seabed mapping, and bathymetric surveys have already been completed by port authorities as part of a forward-looking strategy to ensure uninterrupted maritime traffic.
