Vitol Bunkers has carried out its first biofuel bunkering operation in Singapore using very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) blended with processed Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL).
Sea-news.az reports citing Seanews.az, that the operation was conducted on the bulk carrier Scion Mathilda (82,144 DWT).
A total of 246.5 tons of treated VLSFO was supplied to the vessel, consisting of 212 tons of conventional VLSFO and 34.5 tons of CNSL-blended VLSFO.
The fuel was utilized during the ship’s voyage from China to the Netherlands and subsequently to Brazil. Throughout the journey, at least 120 tons of greenhouse gas emissions in CO₂ equivalent were prevented.
According to the companies, the voyage was completed without any technical or operational issues. The trial demonstrated that CNSL can be integrated into existing fuel supply systems without requiring additional modifications or specialized fuel processing on board.
CNSL is a byproduct generated during the processing of cashew nuts, and companies emphasize its potential as a more widely applicable biofuel component in maritime transport.
