Iran has announced that it could target oil tankers conducting shipments through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Sea-news.az reports citing Qafqazinfo, that this was stated by Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).

According to him, Iran is prepared to strike tankers not only in the Strait of Hormuz, but also along other maritime routes used for oil transport across the Persian Gulf. “We will not allow a single drop of oil to be extracted and exported, not just from the Strait of Hormuz, but even from the Persian Gulf,” Rezaei stated. The SNSC secretary noted that Tehran is ready to resort to such measures if regional countries support the sanctions imposed against Iran by the United States.

Rezaei acknowledged that such a step could also inflict damage on Iran’s own interests, while urging friendly nations in the region to refrain from allying with the U.S. Against the backdrop of this statement, risks concerning the safety of tanker shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf—a vital maritime chokepoint for the global energy market—are expected to escalate further.
