The possibility of renaming the US aircraft carrier USS Doris Miller—which was originally planned to be named in honor of World War II hero Doris Miller—is currently being evaluated. The name of US President Donald Trump has been proposed as the new designation.

Sea-news.az reports that this information was published by CNN.

“It is unclear what the Navy ultimately plans to name the carrier, though two sources said internal discussions have taken place about naming it after Trump. Naming an aircraft carrier after a sitting president would be an unprecedented step,” the publication stated.

The vessel was initially slated to be named after Doris Miller, a sailor who displayed exceptional heroism during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The US Navy is now considering assigning his name to a different naval warship.

Naming the aircraft carrier after Trump would mark the first time such a vessel has taken the name of a serving US president. Discussions regarding the name change have been ongoing since the beginning of the year. Within the Navy, the ship is currently referred to by its hull number, CVN-81.

Concurrently, the Navy has proposed nominating Miller for the Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest military decoration.
