Pressures on Russia-related maritime transport and shadow fleet are tightening

The United States has sold two Russia-linked and confiscated tankers to a recycling company for scrapping. The vessels are being sent to a shipbreaking yard in Alang, India, to be dismantled as scrap metal.

Sea-news.az reports that the US government sold the confiscated tankers Era and Lileo to the recycling company GMS, and both ships are currently sailing toward Alang.

A court decision was issued regarding the utilization of the confiscated vessels, and the US Department of Treasury applied the necessary exemptions (wind-down licenses) for the execution of the operation.

Despite having legal authorizations, banks, marine insurance companies, and other service providers, wary of sanction risks, have been reluctant to cooperate in the process of selling and transporting these tankers.

India’s Alang port, where the tankers are being sent, is one of the largest centers in the world for the utilization (dismantling and conversion into scrap metal) of old and confiscated vessels.
