The sanctioned tanker “Caroline Bezengi” is suffering an accident off the coast of Oman. The vessel, carrying approximately one million barrels of crude oil on board, continues to sink. Oil leaking into the water has become a serious source of danger for the marine reserve.
Sea-news.az reports that the publication Arab News released information about this, citing satellite imagery.
The tanker has been aground for about two months near Khuriya Muriya Islands (Qibliya Island) in southwestern Oman. According to satellite photos, the vessel sank noticeably deeper into the water between July 31 and August 5. As of August 7, the oil spill has already covered an area of nearly 800 square kilometers.
It is noted that the Arabian Sea sanctuary is home to unique animal species, including endangered petrels and rare Arabian humpback whales.
