The total development and construction costs of a new fleet project, which will bear the name of US President Donald Trump and consist of 15 ultramodern warshisps, will reach 275 billion dollars.
Sea-news.az reports that a recent report published by the US Congressional Budget Office (CBO) states that this project will make these naval vessels part of the most expensive warship class ever built in United States maritime history.
According to estimates by the CBO, an independent parliamentary body, the construction of the first nuclear-powered lead ship will cost approximately 23.4 billion dollars. Meanwhile, the average cost of each of the subsequent 14 ships to be built under serial production will be 18 billion dollars.
For comparison, the world’s largest nuclear aircraft carrier, the “USS Gerald R. Ford,” cost approximately 13.3 billion dollars in 2008, which exceeds 20 billion dollars in current prices. Donald Trump announced last December the creation of a new class of warships (Trump-class) bearing his name. Typically, naming naval ships in this manner is carried out only in honor of former heads of state who have completed their term in office.
The CBO report states that these giant warships, which will be significantly larger than the destroyers and cruisers currently in service, will be equipped with the most modern naval weapon systems:
- Anti-aircraft and missile complexes: Anti-aircraft and long-range “sea-to-surface” missile systems;
- Strategic and high-precision weapons: Hypersonic missiles and nuclear-armed cruise missiles;
- Future marine technologies: Laser attack/defense systems and electromagnetic gun (railgun) installations.
