Potential agreements between Iran and Oman regarding future maritime navigation and shipping conditions through the Strait of Hormuz will not result in the immediate opening of the strategic water passage.
Sea-news.az reports that Iran’s state television channel IRIB broadcasted this information. The channel’s source emphasized that even if an agreement is reached between Tehran and Muscat, the strait will remain closed to shipping as long as violations by the US continue: “The opening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on a change in Washington’s behavior and the complete elimination of the violations it has committed.”
This statement was made after reports circulated in Iranian media that Tehran was close to an agreement with Muscat on the creation of a new maritime navigation corridor, provided that the US stops interfering in the negotiations. The source added that the discussions regarding future shipping conditions are carried out exclusively in a bilateral format between Tehran and Muscat and have nothing to do with the US. It was noted that reaching an agreement with Oman on the terms of vessel transit through the Strait of Hormuz does not mean the immediate opening of the water passage to maritime trade.
