Vidadi Narimanbekov, a People’s Artist who made a great contribution to Azerbaijani fine arts, remains one of the most significant figures to have left an indelible mark on the 20th-century Azerbaijani school of painting.
According to sea-news.az that today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of People’s Artist of Azerbaijan, Vidadi Narimanbekov.
Having volunteered for the Second World War, the artist explored the theme of war throughout all periods of his creative career. His works on this theme were exhibited during the Days of Soviet Culture. While still a student, V. Narimanbekov gained fame with his painting “The Enemy’s Joy…”. In 1963, his monumental, large-scale painting “On the Road” brought him even greater renown.
The main protagonist of the artist’s works is the human being. The portraits capture their various moments and moods, immortalizing them on canvas. Vidadi Narimanbekov’s solo exhibitions have been held not only throughout the former Soviet Union but in 20 countries around the world, including Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, Algeria, and Finland. Art lovers, regardless of their religion, language, or race, have found spiritual pleasure in the works of this master painter.
The prominent artist’s painting “Killers,” dedicated to the January 20th tragedy, was exhibited in galleries worldwide, evoking hatred against the brutal Soviet regime.
An outstanding artist who embodied the cultures of two nations—Azerbaijan and France—he became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR in 1961. He was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Azerbaijan in 1982. In 2001, Narimanbekov was awarded the “Shohrat” (Glory) Order; he passed away in Baku on December 13 of the same year.
