The British startup “Drift Energy” plans to build at least 50 vessels that will produce green hydrogen using wind energy. For this purpose, the company has signed a strategic financial and project partnership agreement with “Commenda Capital Partners.”
According to sea-news.az that more than 500 million USD in investments will be attracted within the framework of the project. “Drift Energy” will be responsible for ship technology, onboard hydrogen production systems, and project implementation, while “Commenda Capital Partners” will manage the financing and investment processes.
The sailing vessels will produce green hydrogen at sea by utilizing wind energy and deliver it to ports, islands, and coastal consumers. According to the company, this approach will help overcome the electrical grid and infrastructure limitations typically encountered in traditional renewable energy projects.
“Drift Energy” stated that it plans to commission its first vessel in 2027, followed by the commencement of series production. The company’s energy-producing ship project also received an “Approval in Principle” (AiP) from the classification society RINA earlier this year. This is considered the first AiP ever granted for such a concept.
