Moldova is preparing to join two major international conventions in the field of maritime safety and environmental protection.
According to sea-news.az the Foreign Policy Committee of the countrys parliament has recommended the approval of draft laws on accession to the 2007 Nairobi and 2009 Hong Kong conventions during the plenary session.
Areas of Regulation of the Conventions
The international documents in question establish the following legal mechanisms in the maritime sector:
- The Nairobi Convention: Regulates international rules regarding the timely identification of shipwrecks, as well as the removal of hazards and obstacles they pose to maritime navigation.
- The Hong Kong Convention: Regulates the process of safe and environmentally sound recycling and dismantling of ships that have reached the end of their operating lives.
It is noted that this legal step will make a significant contribution to Moldova’s alignment with international maritime standards and the strengthening of regional cooperation. Both conventions will enter into force after being officially ratified by the Parliament of Moldova.
