The complete melting of all glaciers on Earth could theoretically cause the global ocean level to rise by up to 150 meters, according to Anna Kozachek, a researcher at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
According to sea-news.az Kozachek explained that the melting of all glaciers alone could raise sea levels by approximately 60 meters. If the additional effect of thermal expansion of seawater is taken into account, the total rise could reach 150 meters.
However, the scientist emphasized that such a scenario is not considered realistic within the next few centuries. She noted that global sea-level rise is already being observed: since 1900, ocean levels have increased by about 25 centimeters, and the current average rate of rise is approximately 3 millimeters per year.
Experts also point out that climate change affects not only sea levels but also marine ecosystems. According to a study published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, the continuous increase in ocean temperatures is contributing to a decline in marine biodiversity.
Shahar Chaikin, a researcher at Spain’s National Museum of Natural Sciences, described the trend as “an extremely alarming decline in marine life.”
Scientists stress that more active and coordinated global measures are needed to mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect the world’s oceans for future generations.
