Irans Supreme Joint Military Command has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.
According to sea-news.az the statement warns that any vessel attempting to pass through the strait will be subject to attack. The restriction is said to apply to all commercial vessels, including oil tankers.
The announcement came after the United States reported conducting strikes against several targets in Iran. Reports indicate that air defense systems were activated overnight in various Iranian cities.
At the same time, reports have emerged of confrontations between Iranian and U.S. naval forces in the Strait of Hormuz, while explosions were allegedly heard near Iran’s Qeshm and Hengam islands.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints. A significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies passes through this route. As a result, any disruption or restriction in the strait could have major consequences for international energy markets and global shipping.
