Biofuel-Powered Ships Undergoing Testing

Japans leading shipping company NYK Line has launched a one-year continuous trial program using 100% biofuel (B100) on a car carrier vessel it operates.

According to sea-news.az, citing Seanews.az, the biofuel used in the project is mainly produced from Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) derived from waste cooking oils.

The main objective of the project is to evaluate the impact of biofuel on marine engines and onboard systems under real operating conditions, as well as to assess its long-term safety and reliability.

While NYK Line has previously conducted tests using biofuel blends such as B24 and B30, the company notes that long-term use of B100 biofuel remains limited in global maritime practice.

During the trial period, engine performance, fuel system stability, and overall operational conditions will be continuously monitored. NYK Line believes the results will contribute to wider adoption of high-purity biofuels in shipping and support the acceleration of the maritime energy transition.
