The cruise ship Silver Whisper rescued the captain of a disabled sailing yacht in the North Pacific Ocean.
The incident occurred approximately 420 nautical miles off the coast of Oregon, USA. The Canadian-flagged yacht April Alice was left adrift after losing its mast, while the solo sailor onboard suffered a shoulder injury. Due to the yacht’s remote location far from shore, the U.S. Coast Guard was unable to conduct a helicopter rescue operation.
After receiving the distress signal, Silver Whisper changed course and headed to the scene. Despite rough sea conditions, the cruise ship’s crew successfully passed a tow line to the yacht on their second attempt and safely brought the sailor aboard. He was provided with initial medical assistance.
Following the rescue operation, Silver Whisper continued its voyage and arrived at the Port of Vancouver as scheduled.
