Finnish marine engineering company Deltamarin has joined the EU-funded H4PERION project, which aims to achieve zero-carbon emissions in long-distance maritime transport.
The four-year project focuses on the development of hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines and their real-world testing in commercial shipping operations.
Testing will be conducted both in laboratory conditions and onboard the Aurora Botnia ferry, enabling validation not only in theory but also under operational sea conditions.
Within the project, Deltamarin will also work on integrating hydrogen technology into different vessel types and modelling its large-scale deployment potential.
This approach could help position hydrogen engines as a future standard and scalable solution for global commercial fleets.
The project also covers the development of safety standards, crew training for new fuel systems, and adaptation of port infrastructure. Overall, H4PERION aims to build a comprehensive ecosystem that accelerates decarbonization in maritime transport.
