The commissioning of the first dry cargo vessel built in Turkmenistan, Gadamly, in the Caspian Sea is an important indicator of the strengthening Azerbaijan–Turkmenistan relations.
Speaking to Trend at the reception ceremony for the vessel at the Baku Port, Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Arif Aghayev said that the Middle Corridor is increasingly becoming a serious alternative transport route for the region, and its importance continues to grow.
He noted that all countries along the corridor must improve their infrastructure and create capacity in line with the growing cargo volumes:
“Both Azerbaijan Railways and the Baku International Sea Port are expanding infrastructure. Railways are being upgraded, and new locomotives and wagons are being acquired.”
Aghayev also stated that the current annual handling capacity of the Baku Port is 150,000 TEU. However, due to ongoing expansion works—including dredging and the acquisition of new equipment—this figure is planned to increase to 260,000 TEU.
