The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway line is anticipated to become fully operational this year, according to Emil Mammadov, Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), Report informs.

Speaking at the Caspian and Central Asia Oil Trade and Transport Forum in Baku, he shared updates on its progress.

Mammadov explained that major reconstruction efforts were carried out on the railway line last year, which included expanding terminal capacities. “We are currently working to attract dry cargo. These processes are ongoing, and the volume of transportation is steadily increasing,” he stated.

He emphasized that the transportation of petroleum products via BTK hinges on its full commissioning. “Today, the process is approximately 95% complete, and we are focusing on the final steps. Although providing an exact date is challenging, I believe this issue will be resolved within the year,” Mammadov noted.

The deputy chairman added that once the railway line becomes fully operational, various types of cargo could be handled effectively starting in 2026. “Petroleum-related cargo is classified as dangerous goods according to the nomenclature. Ensuring readiness to accept and transport such cargo via BTK requires thorough preparation,” he remarked.
