French shipping and logistics giant CMA CGM, Nike, and Vietnam’s Gemadept have launched a new fully electric barge designed to reduce carbon emissions from domestic freight operations in Vietnam.

Sea-news.az reports that the barge, operating along a 180-kilometer route, will connect a cargo reception terminal in Ho Chi Minh City with the Gemalink deep-sea port. As part of the project, dedicated charging infrastructure and a solar power installation have been established at the port. The vessel’s battery system will be fully recharged using renewable electricity in approximately four hours.

With an annual transport capacity exceeding 50,000 TEUs, the barge is projected to prevent approximately 778 tons of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) emissions per year. This eco-friendly logistics solution enables lower-emission cargo movement compared to traditional road transport.

CMA CGM noted that the model could be replicated in other countries and integrated into additional customer supply chains in the future.
