The European Commission and the European Union have unveiled a new strategy for the Arctic region.

Sea-news.az reports that the primary objective of the document is to bolster regional security, combat climate change, foster economic development, and expand opportunities for local communities.

The strategy encompasses four priority areas: strengthening security and resilience, implementing climate change response measures, promoting economic prosperity, and supporting the region’s population and local communities.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated that emerging maritime routes and natural resources are heightening strategic competition in the Arctic. Consequently, the European Union plans to expand investments in security, sustainable infrastructure, and economic opportunities.

Under the framework of the strategy, plans include reinforcing maritime security, protecting submarine cables, broadening climate-related research, and supporting renewable energy alongside sustainable transport links. The document places special emphasis on the interests of the local population, particularly youth and indigenous peoples.

The European Union’s statement further noted that the Arctic is warming nearly four times faster than the global average. Environmental and geopolitical shifts occurring in the region directly impact Europe’s security, climate, and economic well-being.
