An underwater transport tunnel is planned for construction in the Gulf of Izmir, Turkey’s third-largest city, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion in the region.
Sea-news.az reports that citing Turkish media, the Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Cemil Tugay, announced the mega-project following his joining of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
According to the mayor, the tunnel will also accommodate a railway line, enabling seamless metro operations between two major districts of Izmir, Gaziemir and Mavişehir. He noted that approval from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has already been secured for the infrastructure project. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the construction of a second ring road in Izmir.
