Two people have reportedly been killed as a result of a fire aboard the vessel “Royad Mammadov” outside Romanian territorial waters.
Sea-news.az reports that this was disclosed in a dispatch published by the Reuters news agency.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Romania announced that 11 crew members were rescued from the burning vessel.
The vessel “Royad Mammadov” sailing in the Black Sea beyond Romania’s territorial waters, was targeted in a drone attack, which triggered a severe fire on board. The captain sustained injuries during the incident, while 13 crew members are currently reported missing.
The Romanian Naval Authority issued an official statement regarding the strike.
Search and rescue operations are currently being carried out in the area by Romanian maritime assets.
The vessel, flying the flag of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis and carrying grain products, was en route from the Ukrainian port of Izmail to Ravenna, Italy.
It should be noted that in 2022, the vessel was named in honor of Royad Mammadov, a martyr of the 44-day Patriotic War.
He was born on October 25, 2000, in the village of Mahmudavar, Masally District, Azerbaijan. After graduating from the Mahmudavar village secondary school, he gained admission to Western Caspian University.
He fought in the Second Karabakh War and was martyred on November 8, 2020, during fierce combat for the strategic road connecting Lachin and Shusha. He was laid to rest in his native village of Mahmudavar.
