A fire broke out on the tanker “Gindara,” which was carrying molasses used in sugar production, at the port of Calaca, located south of Manila, Philippines. At the time of the incident, the vessel was docked near the “Balayan Distillery” plant.
Sea-news.az reports citing the Philippine Coast Guard, that the fire is presumed to have originated in the ship’s engine room. The flames subsequently spread to the accommodation block and the vessel’s bridge.
There were 22 crew members on board when the fire broke out. Twenty of them were safely evacuated, while two sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.
The Philippine Coast Guard dispatched the multi-role response vessel “BRP Malapascua” to the scene.
According to the Coast Guard, no open flames were observed on the vessel’s bridge and superstructure during the day on October 2, though smoke continued to billow.
An investigation into the exact causes of the fire is underway.
