“The target is to increase the volume of transit cargo passing through the territory of Azerbaijan from 16 million tons to 25 million tons.”

Sea-news.az reports that MP Vugar Bayramov shared this on his social media account.

In his post, he noted that during his speech at an event held within the framework of the Azerbaijan International Investment Forum, President Ilham Aliyev stated that demand for cargo transport through Azerbaijan along both the East-West and North-South corridors is growing. The MP analyzed how much foreign currency achieving this goal will bring to Azerbaijan.

“In 2025, out of the 16,813,000 tons of cargo transported by rail, 14,269,000 tons were accounted for by international cargo shipments. Of that, 6,695,000 tons were direct transit cargo. Import cargo stood at 4,723,000 tons, and exports reached 2,850,000 tons. Revenue generated from rail freight transportation amounted to 383,996,000 AZN, with 333,911,000 AZN coming from international cargo shipments.

In 2025, revenue from air cargo transportation reached 2,398,000,000 AZN, of which 2,397,000,000 AZN was contributed by international shipments. Last year, international freight revenues stood at 57,382,000 AZN for maritime transport, 266,560,000 AZN for pipelines, and 204,275,000 AZN for road transport.

Official figures indicate that revenue from international cargo transportation reached 3.3 billion AZN last year. This means that achieving the goal set by the President of Azerbaijan will enable the country to generate over 5 billion AZN annually from international freight transport. Beyond supporting economic diversification, this will create favorable conditions for increasing state revenues, particularly foreign currency inflows,” he noted.
