Call to the EU

International maritime organizations have demanded that certain ship recycling facilities in India be removed from the European Union’s (EU) approved list of facilities and re-evaluated.

Sea-news.az reports citing Seanews.az, that the organizations state that standards regarding environmental protection, hazardous material management, and worker safety are insufficient at a number of facilities. In particular, the method of beaching ships for scrapping is highlighted as a negative aspect.

India is one of the world’s major ship-recycling hubs. The Alang region in the country’s Gujarat state is considered one of the primary areas where vessel recycling is concentrated.

Under EU regulations, ships flying the European flag may only be scrapped at facilities meeting specific environmental and safety requirements. Meanwhile, the Indian side states that facilities are making investments to align with international standards and meet EU criteria.
