Mass fish die-off recorded

A mass mortality event affecting fish has been observed in recent days at Qanli Gol (Bloody Lake), located near the Residential Combine in Baku’s Yasamal district.

Sea-news.az reports that waves have washed dozens of dead fish onto the shores of the lake, causing growing concern among local residents.

Commenting on the incident to Baku TV, environmental expert Rovshan Abbasov stated that the primary causes behind the mass die-off point to toxic contamination and acute oxygen starvation in the water body.

According to Abbasov, oxygen depletion typically occurs when untreated wastewater from surrounding areas is discharged directly into the lake:

“Oxygen deficits happen when nearby wastewater flows into the reservoir, triggering a surge in oxygen-consuming bacteria. This leads to a sharp drop in dissolved oxygen levels in the lake, causing fish to suffocate and die en masse.”

The specialist emphasized that determining the exact cause of the mortality requires immediate laboratory testing to analyze the chemical and biological composition of the lake water.
