Azerbaijani culture has suffered a profound loss.

Sea-news.az reports that Peoples Artist, composer, pedagogue and professor Tofig Bakikhanov passed away on August 23 at the age of 96.

Born in Baku on December 8, 1930, Tofig Bakikhanov came from a distinguished musical family as the son of the master tar player, pedagogue, and People’s Artist Ahmad Bakikhanov. He studied violin at the ten-year music school attached to the U.HajiBayov Azerbaijan State Conservatoire (now the Baku Music Academy), which is currently known as the Bulbul Secondary Special Music School. He graduated from the Conservatoire in two specialties: violin in 1953 (under the tutelage of Alexander Amiton) and composition in 1957 (under the guidance of Gara Garayev).

Bakikhanov engaged in performance activities from his student years, serving as a soloist in the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra and the Azerbaijan Radio Symphony Orchestra.

With a rich creative legacy, the composer authored three ballets (Caspian Ballad, Oriental Poem, and Good and Evil), five symphonic mughams (Nava, Shahnaz, Rahab, Humayun, and Dugah), 8 symphonies, and nearly 100 songs and romances. Alongside his colleague Nariman Mammadov, he composed music for three musical comedies (One of Six Girls is a Fairy, Mammadali Goes to a Resort, and A Girl Rushes to a Date). Furthermore, the composer wrote over 20 sonatas for violin, viola, cello, and flute with piano, trios, quartets, and quintets, as well as 26 concertos for various instruments accompanied by a symphony orchestra.

Professor Tofig Bakikhanov also dedicated over half a century to teaching at the Baku Music Academy, contributing significantly to the upbringing of new generations of musicians.

Harmoniously combining composition with performance, the prominent music figure participated in international festivals in France and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and held author concert programs in Turkey, Iran, Bulgaria, Georgia, and Russia.

Bakikhanov’s services to the development of Azerbaijani musical culture were consistently and highly valued by the state. He was honored with the titles of “Honored Art Worker” (1973) and “People’s Artist” (1990), and was decorated with the “Shohrat” (2000), “Sharaf” (2021), and 1st-degree “Labor” (2025) orders. Since 2002, the master had been a recipient of the President’s personal pension.
