“Azerbaijan is a Caspian littoral state, and the reliable protection of our maritime borders is a vital component of our national security system. The establishment of the State Border Service Coast Guard by the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated February 18, 2005, laid the foundation for a new stage of development in this field.”
Sea-news.az reports citing olke.az, that this was stated by Lieutenant-General Abbas Khalilov, Deputy Chief of the State Border Service.
He noted that in subsequent years, the infrastructure of the Coast Guard was fundamentally developed, technical-observation capabilities were expanded, and the commissioning of modern cutters and border patrol vessels was ensured.
“The establishment of the Ship Construction and Repair Center of the State Border Service elevated the maritime capabilities of Azerbaijan’s border protection to a qualitatively new stage,” the lieutenant-general emphasized.
According to A. Khalilov, today the State Border Service Coast Guard successfully fulfills its duties in protecting the state border in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, ensuring the border regime, preventing illegal activities, and securing strategically important energy infrastructure.
