Ecological alarm at beaches

Toxic cyanobacteria have been detected on some beaches of the Baltic Sea, and doctors are urging swimmers to exercise caution.

Sea-news.az reports citing Euronews, that due to prolonged warm weather, algae blooms are forming increasingly more frequently in the Baltic Sea.

An abundance of sunny weather and high water temperatures create favorable conditions for their intensive reproduction.

Studies conducted on a “carpet” of algae in the Baltic Sea west of Warnemünde (Germany) have confirmed the presence of toxin-producing cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).

Therefore, the local health department recommends refraining from swimming in these waters. Skin contact with blue-green algae can cause swelling, irritation, or allergic reactions. In severe cases, vomiting and gastrointestinal illnesses may occur.

Doctors call for special caution regarding children and dogs. Dogs should also not be allowed to drink this water.
