The length of the coastline polluted as a result of an oil spill from the tanker “Caroline Bezengi” in the area of Ras Madrakah, Oman, has reached approximately 12 kilometers.

Sea-news.az reports that the Environment Authority of the Sultanate of Oman released this information.

“Recent field data show that the length of the beaches affected by pollution in the Ras Madrakah area is approximately 12 km. Work to clean up the consequences is currently underway in the area,” the authority stated in its announcement.

“As for the oil slick at sea, updated monitoring data shows that it continues to move towards the southeast of Masirah Island, in the direction of the open sea,” the authority added.

It was noted that specialists continue to track the movement of the slick while taking weather and sea conditions into account.

On August 12, the Omani Environment Authority announced that an oil slick caused by leaks from the grounded tanker “Caroline Bezengi” had reached the country’s shores. According to experts’ forecasts, the length of the polluted coastline in the Ras Madrakah area could have reached 40 km. Earlier, the area of the oil slick in the waters was estimated at 390 square kilometers.
