Iran and Oman are considering the possibility of introducing a transit fee for the transit of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, amounting to 3–7 percent of the declared value of the cargo carried on board.

Sea-news.az citing “Reuters,” that the issue was discussed during negotiations between the Iranian and Omani delegations regarding the restoration of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the information, the Iranian side insists on setting the transit fee at the level of 5–7 percent. Meanwhile, Oman proposes applying a lower rate of 3 percent. At the same time, the United States categorically opposes the introduction of any service fees in favor of Iran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Persian Gulf countries believe that if an agreement is reached regarding the introduction of such payments, the amounts to be paid by shipowners should be strictly voluntary in nature. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the main routes of strategic importance for global energy and maritime trade. The introduction of potential additional fees for passage through the strait could affect the costs of shipping companies and freight shipping tariffs across the region.
