The United Nations (United Nations – UN) has called for the evacuation of approximately 6,000 seafarers stranded in the Gulf amid the deteriorating security situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to sea-news.az that, according to UN data, nearly 6,000 seafarers currently aboard about 500 vessels in the region are trapped due to security risks.
The UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) noted that following the resumption of military operations on July 12–13, virtually very few vessels have passed through the narrow waterway.
Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, stated that the plight of the 6,000 seafarers remaining on board approximately 500 vessels anchored near the Strait of Hormuz is of grave concern. “We must not forget that these are civilians carrying out their professional duties. They are not trained to participate in combat operations, and ships are not designed to defend against missile and drone attacks,” he emphasized.
