The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Canada has announced an investment of 76.5 million Canadian dollars (approximately 54 million USD) for the establishment of the Marine Innovations and Simulation Centre of Excellence (MISE) in the province.

According to sea-news.az citing Seanews.az, that the project, to be implemented in partnership with Kongsberg and Kongsberg Maritime, will serve to advance maritime innovation and personnel training, expand applied scientific research, and support the priorities of Canada’s Defense Industry Strategy.

Within the center, research, testing, and accident analysis will be conducted in an environment created based on Kongsberg Maritime’s simulation technologies. The center will focus on maritime safety, autonomous navigation, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, port development, and low- to zero-emission vessel operations.

The project will also introduce cloud-based simulation systems. This will expand remote education and training opportunities for students while simultaneously increasing access to maritime education and professional training for Canada’s Indigenous peoples.

Canada’s Minister of Industry, Mélanie Joly, stated that MISE, which will be the country’s first national marine simulation and applied research center, will make a significant contribution to addressing the shortage of certified mariners, developing new products, and advancing the country’s maritime and defense industries.
