Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Rashad Ismayilov has stated that changes in the water level of the Caspian Sea have become one of Azerbaijan’s key environmental priorities. According to him, joint monitoring, information exchange, and discussions on this issue are already being carried out with three other Caspian littoral states.

According to sea-news.az that the decline in the Caspian Sea’s water level is a matter of major importance for the region’s ecology, biodiversity, port infrastructure, shipping, fisheries, and the socio-economic development of coastal areas. Minister Ismayilov emphasized that addressing this challenge requires regional cooperation and coordinated action among the Caspian countries.

He also highlighted that:

  • Azerbaijan has joined more than 20 international environmental conventions and protocols;
  • This demonstrates the country’s commitment to the global environmental and climate agenda;
  • Azerbaijan’s hosting of COP29 has strengthened its position as an important center for international climate dialogue;
  • The 10th session of the World Urban Forum, organized in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), has also contributed to raising environmental awareness in the country.

In recent years, the declining water level of the Caspian Sea has remained a major concern for the countries of the region. As a result, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and other coastal states are seeking to expand cooperation in the management of water resources and the assessment of climate change impacts.
