One of the world’s leading container shipping companies, Hapag-Lloyd, and shipowner Seaspan Corporation have successfully completed the first project under their joint methanol conversion program.

According to sea-news.az citing Seanews.az, the 10,100-TEU container vessel “Seaspan Yangtze” has been converted from a conventional MAN S90 engine to a dual-fuel engine capable of operating on methanol. The program also includes the vessels Seaspan Amazon, Seaspan Ganges, Seaspan Thames, and Seaspan Zambezi.

According to the companies, a total investment of approximately US$120 million will be made to modernize the five vessels. The use of methanol fuel is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 30,000–50,000 tonnes per vessel annually.

Hapag-Lloyd stated that adapting existing vessels for alternative fuels is a key component of the company’s strategy to decarbonize its fleet operations by 2045. The initiative represents another important step in the maritime industry’s transition toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly shipping solutions.
